Abstract
The National Library of Australia has developed a Leadership Capability Model (LCM) tailored to its current needs as anticipated over the next several years. This Model uses four pillars to unpack what leadership means in the Library’s context – having regard to the need to create sustainability of operations in the future while recognising the every tightening budget constraints of publicly funded organisations.
The Library’s LCM is supported by a Leadership Resource Kit that translates the big concepts into meaningful action for staff and senior managers. It is presented as a self-reflective development tool without the discomfort that may attach to anointing “talent”. It is anticipated that the LCM will eventually inform other significant people management initiatives including: training and development; recruitment and selection; and performance management.
